Science Centre Celebrates Hubble’s 20th Anniversary
Visitors to Dundee Science Centre - Sensation in Dundee’s Greenmarket area will be in for a cosmic experience with the addition of the incredible Hubble 20th Anniversary print, which is now on display in the Auditorium.
The image, the only one of its kind being displayed in Scotland, is a tribute to Hubble’s twenty years in orbit, and shows a stunning image of a star forming region taken by a recently fitted camera on board the Hubble telescope.
The print, which is one of only a hundred specially commissioned by NASA and the European Space Agency to mark the historic occasion, is called ‘Pillar and Jets’ and features towers of cool hydrogen with dust rising from the nebula’s wall.
According to NASA’s official press release, “The image captures the top of a three-light-year-tall pillar of gas and dust that is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. The pillar is also being pushed apart from within, as infant stars buried inside it fire off jets of gas that can be seen streaming from towering peaks like arrows sailing through the air”.
The arrival of the print is a precursor to a summer of space-age fun at Dundee Science Centre, with the ‘One Small Step’ exhibition, which uses images, film and detailed models to explain the landmark stages of space exploration, from the earliest concepts of space travel, to the historic moment of the moon landing. The exhibition also showcases the future of space travel and the hope for travel to other worlds. The arrival of the ‘One Small Step’ exhibition coincides with the arrival of a planetarium, which is predicted to be very popular.
